One of the most intimidating challenges facing a new boater is docking. On the surface, it is a very basic task, and not the most risky either. However, there is always the possibility that the boat, the dock, or both will be damaged if something goes wrong. It is also not something that a new boater can put off until they feel they are ready. To help ease you into docking your boat, Team Winnebagoland Marine Center has created this step-by-step docking guide.

Approaching the Dock

When it comes time to dock your boat, start by scanning the area for potential hazards. Find anything that could interfere in your docking, like a loose line that could become tangled in your propeller. Even tiny turns of the wheel can go a long way, so be careful not to overshoot your target. The stern moves first, so use that to maneuver yourself into position.

The Proper Wake Boat Speed

It is obvious that moving too fast can make safe docking impossible, but moving too slow can cause you to drift off course. Find a balance between slow and fast, and approach only at a speed that you are willing to hit the dock at. Use the engine’s lowest setting, with occasional bursts of power as needed. Remember that even the most experienced boater gets the occasional scratch or ding when docking.

Wake Boat and Wind

Be aware of the wind. If it is blowing towards the dock, you can harness it by approaching parallel to the dock, as close as you can get. Let the wind guide you. Sometimes, the wind will instead be blowing away from the dock. In these situations, approach at a sharper angle to get through some of the wind. Use your momentum to counter the wind, and be very careful.
