Keeping Your Boat Seats Clean
Boating can be incredibly rewarding, but it’s also full of unique challenges. An easy maintenance task to overlook is simply keeping the seats of your boat clear of mold and mildew. For helpful instructions on how to keep your boat’s seats clean and pristine, check out our article below.
Supplies
Before you start, you’ll need a few special supplies. Don’t use harsh chemicals like bleach on vinyl, since it can discolor and damage it. Bleach is also hard on seams, which can lead to a total seat replacement. Instead, use gentler cleaners like CLR® Mold & Mildew Remover. You’ll also want a soft-bristle brush, some microfiber cloths, some gentle sponges, and a few Magic Erasers on hand. Finally, you’ll want a marine-grade sealant to protect your vinyl in the future.
Spray And Scrub
Spray the vinyl with your cleaner and make sure the liquid reaches every crevice. If you find concentrated mold or mildew, you may want to apply more liquid there. Let it soak for five or ten minutes, then scrub gently with your brush. Don’t grind the bristles, as this can damage the vinyl. Stains should come off easily enough with a firm but gentle hand.
Wipe It Down
Next, use sponges or microfiber cloth to wipe away all the debris and dirty fluids. If patches of mold remain, repeat the cycle on those spots specifically. Stubborn patches may require the Magic Eraser, which should be rubbed in gentle, circular motions on the stains. Wipe the vinyl down again when you’re done.
Seal It Up
Once all traces of mold and mildew have been removed, you’ll want to seal your vinyl so it’s protected in the future. Spray it down with your marine-grade sealant, which is designed to give your seats a nice glossy finish while also making them harder to dirt, mold, and mildew to hold on to. The sealant will even help protect the vinyl from sun damage, which can discolor and break down the material over time.
