It is no surprise that pontoon boats are one of the most popular types of watercraft. They are highly versatile, extremely stable, and offer plenty of room. If you are interested in purchasing a pontoon boat, follow this guide from Team Winnebagoland Marine Center to find a model that is right for you.

The Pontoons

Pontoon boats are named for the structures at the bottom of the craft. These hollow cylinders are the main reason why pontoon boats are so famously stable. Two pontoons per boat are considered standard, though pontoons with three cylinders called tritoons are also available. Pontoons vary in size, with the standard model having a diameter between 23 and 25 inches.

Activities

When looking at pontoon models, try to find one that has features that align with how you intend to use the boat. For example, fishermen will benefit from layouts that allow them to easily cast from different sides of the boat, accessories like a livewell and rod holders, and slip-resistant vinyl flooring. If you are interested in watersports, find a model with a powerful engine and sufficient storage space. If you just want to find a good spot and do some swimming, features like a swim deck, improved ladder, and slides will enhance your experience.

The Number of Passengers

A larger pontoon boat will obviously be able to hold more people. However, larger also means more expensive. Think carefully about how many people you want to bring on your trip and use that to decide how large of a pontoon boat to purchase.

The Ideal Horsepower

You may need more or less engine power depending on how you plan to use the pontoon boat. If you just want to take a few leisurely cruises, 40 HP should be fine. If you are a watersports enthusiast, you will need a lot more engine power. Models with 300 HP or more should be up to the task.
