Preventing PWC Theft
Many PWC owners appreciate how easy these watercraft are to transport, especially compared to a more traditional boat. Unfortunately, this also makes PWC a popular target for thieves. That is why Team Winnebagoland Marine Center has created this guide to preventing PWC theft.
On the Water
There are three places where a PWC can be stolen, the first of which is on the water. An unattended craft is an easy target for thievery, so always chain up your PWC to an immovable object whenever you need to leave it for any reason. Keep your lanyard on your person at all times. If your model has additional security features like a digitally encoded lanyard, electronic lock, or removable magnetic key, take advantage of them.
On the Trailer
The second place that your PWC can be stolen is on the trailer. Heavy-duty, drill-proof trailer locks are not cheap, but they are more than worth it when it comes to security. There are many options when it comes to trailer locks, including coupler latch locks, receiver locks, bow-pin locks, and anti-theft wheel locks. You can also use a strong cable lock to secure the PWC to the trailer.
When traveling with a PWC in a trailer, always park in a place with adequate lighting and security cameras when possible. Keep your tow vehicle locked and the PWC covered. If you are traveling with someone else, ask them to park close to you. If you are really worried, install a motion sensor alarm in your tow vehicle.
In Storage
The third place from which your PWC can be stolen is in storage. Ideally, your PWC should be stored in a secured garage. If this is not possible, keep it behind a locked gate. If neither of these options is viable, do what you can to make the PWC inaccessible to thieves. Park your car directly in front of the craft and turn the trailer so that the hitch is difficult to get to. An anti-theft wheel lock can also help.
If you are storing your PWC for an extended period, you can remove the wheels and install a coupler lock. We suggest using locking lug nuts and storing your spare tire out of sight to prevent thieves from trying to replace the wheels.
Additional Tips
Keep detailed photos of your PWC’s Hull Identification Number (HIN), engine compartment, trailer, and any other identifying features in case someone does make off with it. Remember that thieves want things to be quick and easy for them. Anything that draws attention or makes things more difficult will deter them.
